Fyrir hönd Háskóla Íslands fór ég ásamt þremur öðrum nemendum til Færeyja. Tilgangur ferðarinnar var að taka þátt í fjölþjóðlegu verkefni á vegum Hydrogen Learning Network (verkefni innan NORA), þar sem viðfangsefnin voru um nýorku og orkuframleiðslu. Verkefnin voru í samvinnu við fyrirtæki og sveitarfélög í Færeyjum sem enduðu svo á kynningu á niðurstöðum fyrir fulltrúa fyrirtækja og sveitarfélaga. Skírteini voru afhend, viðurkennd af þeim fimm háskólum sem tóku þátt, Háskóli Íslands, Fróðskaparsetur Færeyja, University of Prince Edward Island, Heriot Watt University - Orkney Campus and Høgskulen på Vestlandet.
Það var mikil áhersla lögð á að kynnast fólki og menningu Færeyja, þar sem að tæknilegar lausnir eru ekki ávallt eingöngu tæknilegar eðlis. Oft þarf að bera virðingu fyrir skoðunum og þörfum viðeigandi aðila og sníða lausnir að þeim. Margar ferðir voru farnar um Færeyjar þar sem saga og pólitískar aðstæður Færeyinga voru útskýrðar fyrir okkur.
Verkefnið sem ég tók þátt í ásamt tveimur örðum nemendum var um tvíkilju vinnu-báta sem fyrirtækið KJ-Hydraulik hannar og smíðar. Þeir eru að kanna mögulegar lausnir til þess að draga úr loftmengun bátanna, við kynntum mögulegar uppsetningar á rafmagns og diesel blendings kerfi og rafmagns-vetnis blendings kerfi.
Ég skemmti mér konunglega og kynntist mörgum aðilum í líku námi og ég (og aðilum sem vinna við nýorku) frá Kanada, Noregi, Orkneyjum og Færeyjum.
On behalf of the University of Iceland, I and three other students went to the Faroe Islands. The purpose of the trip was to participate in a multinational project under the auspices of the Hydrogen Learning Network (project within NORA), where the issues were about sustainable energy and energy production. The projects were in collaboration with companies and municipalities within the Faroe Islands, which then ended by presenting the results to representatives of the companies and municipalities. Certificates were handed out, recognized by the five participating universities, Háskóli Íslands, Fróðskaparsetur Færeyja, University of Prince Edward Island, Heriot Watt University - Orkney Campus and Høgskulen på Vestlandet.
In addition, great emphasis was placed on getting to know the people and culture of the Faroe Islands, as technical solutions are not always purely technical. Often, the views and needs of the relevant parties need to be respected and technical solutions tailored to them. Many trips were made around the Faroe Islands, where the history and political conditions of the Faroe Islands were explained to us.
The project I participated in, along with two other students, was about catamaran work-boats that the company KJ-Hydraulik designs and builds. They are exploring possible solutions to reduce the air pollution of the boats so we introduced the possible installation of the electric and diesel hybrid systems and the electric hydrogen hybrid system.
I had a great time and got acquainted with many people in similar studies as I (and individuals who work in sustainable energy) from Canada, Norway, Orkney and the Faroe Islands.
